Print Shop Internship

Core Responsibilities:

Pressroom: Interns are responsible for assisting printers by sponging stones and plates, helping lay paper onto the printing matrix, and clean-up after printing. Some manual labor is needed to help move stones/objects on occasion. Time management is important for schedules.

Shop Maintenance: Under the guidance of the Shop supervisor, Senior printer, or Education Director, interns must be willing to clean/maintain the shop on a weekly basis, especially after a project ends. Tasks include: sweeping, cleaning tables, organizing newsprint, filling containers and general shop supplies. Errands might occur.

Graining Room: Images need to be removed from stones after projects are completed. There are plenty of stones to be grained that are generated from the professional and educational side. Some prior graining experience is helpful, but not necessary. Staff can help train in this process.

Knowledge and special skills and abilities required:

  1. A strong work ethic that includes initiative.
  2. Being alert and having attention to detail.
  3. Preferable to have lithography experience.
  4. Showing up to work on time.

Special Considerations: It is understood that it is the intern’s responsibility to implement a regular schedule regarding dates and times of availability that meet the minimum requirements necessary to receive UNM credit.

Curating Internship

 

Core Responsibilities:

Evaluates lithographic editions for quality: Interns will learn to evaluate each impression of an edition, learn to identify and repair printing flaws and determine a range of acceptability. Record keeping: Under the supervision of the Curator, interns will gain knowledge in handling, cataloging and documenting lithographic editions. Prepare editions for signing: Interns will assist the Curator in organizing, numbering and chopping editions of prints, before they are signed by the artist. Occasionally the intern will have the opportunity to assist an artist signing and edition Packs and ships prints: Interns will periodically pack and ship purchased prints as well as learn to pack editions of artwork to send to the artist for signing. Manage paper inventory: Managing the paper inventory involves keeping track of paper quantities used by the student and professional printers, through paper requisitions, and consulting with the Curator on yearly paper orders. Special projects: Depending on the intern’s skill set, there are a variety of independent projects related to Tamarind’s Catalogue Raisonné.

Knowledge and special skills and abilities required:

  1. Keen attention to detail is essential.
  1. Enjoys working with his or her hands.
  1. Knowledge of the lithographic process.
  1. Stamina as the majority of these tasks require standing for long periods.

Advance notification must be given to either the Education Coordinator or Assistant Director of any changes to the schedule.

Gallery Internship

Core Responsibilities:

Reception Desk: While carrying out administrative tasks, interns are responsible for greeting gallery visitors and providing basic information about Tamarind.

Artwork handling, preparation and installation: Under the supervision of the Gallery Director and Curator, interns will gain knowledge in handling, cataloging and documenting prints for exhibition, as well as proper techniques for hanging and installing work. Interns will be expected to handle and organize prints in our flat files and learn archival framing and packing methods. Additional related tasks include packing and shipping prints, assistance with lighting, wall tags and general gallery upkeep.

Documentation: Photographically documenting print editions, events, or the artist and printers in the workshop may be required from time to time. Basic Photoshop editing skills for touching up these photos is preferred, but not necessary.

Administrative duties: Administrative duties include answering phones, email correspondence, making scans/photocopies, data entry, proofreading, design support, processing product invoices, maintaining online calendars and databases, social media posts, and updating websites with new images and information. Additional related tasks may include trips to campus, the post office and very limited general errands.

Special events/projects: It is not required for interns to help staff at special events, such as openings, studio visits and artist talks, but it is encouraged.

Knowledge and special skills and abilities required:

  1. Knowledge and proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint.
  1. Some working knowledge of Photoshop is preferred.
  1. Ability to analyze, solve problems, and create organized solutions to projects.
  1. Attention to detail is a must.
  1. Strong communication skills on the phone, in email, and in person.

Marketing/Social Media Internship Fall 2016

(photography and digital media for social marketing)

Duties and Responsibilities

Plans and executes social media campaigns, including proposing content, creating images, writing and posting. Proposes, directs, and produces digital media for promotional and marketing purposes. Assists in the production of routine promotional materials, including writing and editing news releases, newsletter articles, etc. Assists in planning and coordinating promotional special events including fundraisers, outreach and community events, tours, or openings. Utilizes and updates marketing and inventory systems. Maintains database records and files. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Ability to prepare routine printed promotional materials.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications.
  • Expertise in Social Media venues.
  • Ability to develop and maintain files and records.
  • Ability to prepare routine administrative paperwork.
  • Organizing and coordinating skills.

Distinguishing Characteristics

  • Photography, digital video and editing skills preferred.

General Marketing 

(uploading images to Cat Raisonne, or into AppQuest – maybe photographing at UNMAM)

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Works directly with Marketing Specialist doing various duties as needed.
  2. Completes upload of online images within print inventory system. Assist in maintenance of catalogue raisonne, and digital library.
  3. Photographs works on paper, edits images and stores files in digital library.
  4. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED with 1 to 3 years experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications.
  • Ability to develop and maintain files and records.
  • Ability to prepare routine administrative paperwork.
