Welcome to our NEW Alumni Page!

As the Arts Management Minor grows, so do the successes and opportunities for our alumni. This page will regularly feature select Arts Management Alumni sharing their stories.

Christian Waguespack

Recently, we had the pleasure to learn a little bit about one of UNM Arts Management’s alumni from the College of Fine Arts, Christian Waguespack. Originally from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Christian moved to New Mexico in 2009 to complete his undergraduate and graduate degrees. He now holds a Master’s in Art History/Museum Studies. Recently, he was named the curator of 20th Century Art at the New Mexico Museum of Art in Santa Fe.

Christian notes how Fine Arts courses do a wonderful job in teaching the students about the practice or research of their intended field, but they do not necessarily guide the student in obtaining a professional position in the Arts. Christian attributes a lot of his professional success to Arts Management because of the curriculum, such as grant writing or internship experience, he learned through the program’s courses.

If you’re not at the table, you’re on the menu.

–An adage Christian lives by

Arts Management helped nudge Christian out of his comfort zone and learn skills that he finds himself using today as a professional curator. His advice for students is to be diverse. The classroom is a low-risk and perfect environment to learn and try new things outside of your specific interests. Although artists tend to view themselves outside of business territory, he urges them to be involved in both the art and the business community. Employers are always looking for applicants with experience, and with the Arts Management internship, students will have that.

Christian sees himself as someone who helps artists achieve their goals by working with them and creating an arts environment. As a curator for a small museum in Santa Fe, he finds himself essential to many tasks or projects that do not necessarily fall under a curator’s job description. Thus, he encourages students to strive to learn as much as they can because it will be fundamental to their professional careers.

Congratulations to Christian for his impressive position as the 20th Century Art Curator at the New Mexico Museum of Art in Santa Fe!
